How will the end of Google+ affect SEO?

Google+ launched in 2011 as Google’s attempt at a social media platform. Originally conceived to take market share from social media juggernaut Facebook, it never achieved its goal. Other than some hardcore fans, Google+ by 2018 has become largely a has-been. So when news broke that there had a been a data breach of user information at G+, it was not a huge surprise that the corporation announced it would be shutting down operations over the coming months.

The end of Google+ has seemed inevitable for a while. The question is, now that Google has officially announced the end, what impact will it have on SEO?

Google+

When it first launched, Google hinted that Google plus and +1 buttons would be a factor in search rankings. They did show up in searches over the years. Google also offered Search Plus Your World, a personalized search that showed results based on what your Google plus friends searched for and clicked on. Google actively tried to drive conversation on its social network by recommending people take their search to Google+, including highlighting Google+ content in search results and in Google News and showing users what was trending on Google plus. There was also an in-depth local search integration between Google Local and Google plus results.

Ultimately, all these attempts to promote Google+ failed. Over the years, Google stopped the heavy promotion of G+. Features and integrations with other Google products slowly faded. At this point, G+ does not play a large role in Google search. Although it has affected search in the past, it has been inactive for a while now.

When Google+ is shut down for consumer use in August 2019, I expect no impact to SEO. This has been a long time coming, Google just made it official.

 

Bing Finally Gets One Up On Google – AOL Search is now powered by Bing

As of January 1, 2016, AOL Search is now powered by Bing.  Bing confirmed this change and acknowledged that all AOL “algorithmic search results” and “paid search” will be powered by Bing.

According to Comscore’s March 2015 Study, AOL accounts for about 1.1% of of the total search volume and Bing is responsible for approximately 19.8% of the search volume.

Google Maintains Share of Search; Mobile Search Volume Exploding

Google’s rules still control National SEO, and Responsive Website Design and Mobile Sites are becoming more critical for online marketers according to the numbers in a recent study.

In a study conducted by Comscore in February of 2014, Google controlled 67.5 percent of search volume in the United States. Bing held 18.4 percent and Yahoo held 10.3 percent. These numbers were essentially the same as the numbers in January of 2014.

In February 2013, Google had the same 67.5 percent of queries while Bing had 16.7 percent, and Yahoo had 11.6 percent. In February of 2012, Google controlled 66.4 percent of queries, Bing 15.3 percent and Yahoo 13.8 percent.

Responsive Website Design

Total search volume has steadily increased since 2011. Total US search queries for February 2011 were 15.4 billion. That grew to 17.6 billion in 2012 and 18.2 billion in February 2013. This past month total search query volume was 17.7 billion.
Mobile search volume is not included in these numbers. Mobile search percentage is as follows: Google: 87.1 percent, Yahoo: 7.3 percent, Bing: 5.2 percent.

Bottom Line: It is projected that global mobile search queries will surpass PC-based search volumes at some point in 2014. This shift has marketers scrambling to install mobile sites and responsive website designs to provide a better user experience for mobile site visitors. What’s New for September 10, 2013 – Google Keyword and Disavow Tools, Email Scanning

Google Keyword Tool is Officially Out to Pasture

An SEO resource has changed, and not everyone is happy about it. The Google Keyword Tool has been replaced with Google’s new Keyword Planner, and the landscape for Keyword Research has changed. Users will be required to log into an AdWords account to use the tool, and will not be able to access match type data for search volume, device targeting data, or global versus local searches.

The bright side of the change is that users are able to retrieve keyword search volume data down to the city level; can upload up to 10,000 keywords to access performance data; and search volumes by ad group, landing page, and many other categories established by the user.

Time and Google slow for no one, and once the grumbling about having to learn a new system is over, users will be able to continue to conduct online advertising business as usual.

Google Argues For Email Scanning

Google is asking a judge to dismiss a class action lawsuit, filed in May, that says Google “unlawfully opens up, reads, and acquires the content of people’s private email messages” in violation of California’s privacy laws and federal wiretapping statutes. The lawsuit also alleges that Google scans messages sent to active Gmail users from non-Gmail users who never agreed to the company’s terms and conditions.

Google has openly admitted that it targets its advertising based on words that show up in Gmail messages, and defends its actions by stating that no humans read any of the email, and the process is 100% automated. Consumer Groups contend that email has an expectation of privacy that should be preserved.

Another piece in the ongoing saga of privacy versus online advertising efficiency.

Google’s Link Disavow Tool: More Harm Than Good?

Many Webmasters and SEO firms have used Google’s disavow tool that launched almost a year ago to overcome penalties brought on by the Google Penguin. Now Google itself has come out and unequivocally stated that use of this tool may actually harm search rankings.

Google’s Eric Kuan from the search quality team said:

“The disavow backlinks tool should be used with caution since it can potentially harm your site’s performance. However, if you see a considerable number of spammy, artificial, or low-quality links point to your site, and you’re confident that the links are causing issues for your site, you can use the disavow tool to disavow those links. In most cases, Google can assess which links to trust without additional guidance, so most normal or typical sites will not need to use this tool.”

Be judicious in how you employ the link disavow tool. You may inadvertently neutralize links that are helping your site to rank and do more harm than good.

Bottom Line: This has definitely been a Google Update. I applaud the fact that the search giant is making an effort to communicate more and help to access information in an orderly and helpful way. The privacy issues will be a source of controversy for years to come. The courts, The Federal Trade Commission, and even foreign governments have gotten involved. The factor that will cause any gigantic online entity to pay attention is decreased traffic or market share. Until that happens, I truly do not believe that significant change will occur in online privacy policies.

What’s New for August 2, 2013 – Social Satisfaction, City Experts, Responsive Ad Units

Social Site Satisfaction Scores Dropping

ForeSee found that satisfaction scores for social media sites dropped a point from 69 to 68 in 2013. Specific Social Media Sites like Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest saw gains in their satisfaction scores, while Google+ showed a dramatic decline. Full results are in the table below.

When asked to pinpoint areas of decreased satisfaction, most users pointed to the presence of ads. Social Sites must continue to balance the equation between advertising and user satisfaction.

Google Recruits “City Experts” to Write Google+ Reviews

Google is soliciting Google+ users to become “City Experts.”

To qualify as a City Expert you have to be an active reviewer on Google+ — defined as 50 reviews total, 5 reviews per month average. Incentives to join are as follows:

  • Free swag
  • Online recognition
  • Access to exclusive events in their local areas

Google is struggling to get local reviews and the company is trying a number of things. Only time will tell if this tactic will work.

Google Launches New Ad Unit For Responsive Sites

Google has launched a new beta test for a responsive AdSense unit that is specifically designed to run on sites featuring responsive design.

Developers can use the same kind of CSS media queries used in building their responsive sites to build these responsive ad units. This, Google says, gives advertisers the ability to “now dynamically specify the size of the ad that will be served, adapting it to fit the way your site renders a page on a particular device.” The only thing developers need to ensure is that the size of the ad unit they specify for each screen size matches one of Google’s standard ad sizes.

Google continues to encourage the use of responsive design techniques wherever possible.

Bottom Line:  Google is busy with updates and trying to ensure that they remain the leader in search. Consumers have spoken on the subject of too many online ads or ads that do not fit within the context of the content being viewed. Now the question becomes how social sites will continue to deliver ads, and generate revenues, without losing their audience.

Google Voice Search Improved

Google has offered voice search for some time, but a new, improved version will let you talk back to the search engine giant. The new talk search will most likely have the microphone on your device on awaiting your command of “OK Google” to initiate a voice search.

The capability now of having one voice search at a time will be replaced with the ability to have an actual conversation with Google. The description below is from the Google blog post about this innovation:

Soon, you’ll be able to just say, hands-free, “OK Google, will it be sunny in Santa Cruz this weekend?” and get a spoken answer.

Then, you’ll be able to continue the conversation with Google and just follow up with “how far is it from here?” if you care about the drive or “how about Monterey?” if you want to check weather somewhere else, and get Google to tell you the answer.

See, it’ll understand where you are, so “here” is already known without having to say a place name. Of if you just searched for “weather,” then it can guess that you want weather for another city even if you don’t say the word “weather.”

The actual release date of this product should be available soon.

Bottom Line: Google has been the search leader for some time. Addressing the threat of Siri, which bypasses Google search results entirely for some search terms, will allow Google to use this voice search option and provide an answer to the search volume that may be lost to searches in Siri.

Matt Cutts Of Google Talks About Upcoming Changes

Matt Cutts of Google has just done something that he rarely, if ever, has done:  give a preview of what is coming in terms of changes that will affect SEO in the near future, defined as the summer of 2013. Of course, this list was accompanied by the usual disclaimers that all of these initiatives are subject to change as the future unfolds.

Google Penguin 2.0

A partial list of the proposed changes is below:

  1. Google Penguin 2.0 Expect it to become more and more difficult to employ black hat link building techniques and gain rankings on Google. Stick to real links that a human being would use. Google Penguin 2.0 will be significant according to Cutts.
  2. Advertorial Spam Links Devalued – It will become difficult to get page weight credit for a link from a website that is paid for as opposed to place for the benefit of the website’s visitors.
  3. More Sophisticated Link Analysis – A stricter definition of spammed links and more sophisticated tools to use in detecting and discounting the value of these links.
  4. Improvements For Sites With Malware Hacks -More sophisticated tools to detect malware in a site and a full set of tools within webmaster tools to test, identify and eliminate malware from websites.  This is especially noteworthy for sites built in Word Press.
  5. Authority Sites Boosted In Algorithm – Efforts will be made to identify true authorities in different areas of expertise and bonus these authorities in the search engine rankings.
  6. Panda To Be Relaxed – Some sites that have been held back due to Google Panda (lack of unique, compelling and original content) will be given somewhat of a break under the new guidelines.

Bottom Line: For most websites, SEO will likely continue to be a challenge, but not a challenge that will have significant negative impacts on site rankings.  Webmasters will have to continue to strive to build sites that offer a great user experience through original and compelling content that is valuable to the visitors of the site.  It is a lot of work, but you will sleep much better at night.
